Worthie Paul Meacham III, Most Famously known as ‘Momma’, Has Been Good to UsBy Nicholas Snow (byline and headline not necessary if it does not reflect your style). In the famed musical Chicago is the lyric, “When you’re good to Momma, Momma’s good to you...” Well, Worthie Paul Meacham III reversed that role and devotes his life in service to others, regardless of the return. Born on a night when Worthie had the courage to dress up for Dragstrip 66, Momma’s spirit has infused the GLBT community since. Over the years, Momma has helped with almost every AIDS service organization in Southern California; youth service groups such as the Trevor Project, GLASS (Gay and Lesbian Adolescent Social Services) and GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network); and many breast cancer charities—supporting efforts which have raised over nine million dollars.
He has received five WeHo Awards for Outstanding Drag Diva, Community Leader, and worked with many religious groups to help them understand who gay people are in their churches. He also works on behalf of transgendered communities. Momma appeared in the opera ‘Il Pagliacci’ for Franco Zeferelli at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and at the Kennedy Center; visited the White House and met the President and Mrs. Clinton; appeared on Will & Grace and in Aerosmith videos; and has a long-running stint as the trophy girl at the coveted Outfest Awards night. In his day job, he works for Bob Mackie, but Hollywood’s call is getting louder, so who knows what’s next! “I never thought that my life would make a difference. But that is the magic of my story,” Worthie expressed. “A little bit over time makes a difference. Giving to people is always a joy. Sometimes the work is hard and long, but the results have always been amazing to me.”
